Hello, marketeers!
Thanks for the great feedback from the last newsletter (Are you a Plotter or a Pantser?). Have you started your monthly planning?
Just a quick one today as I’m in the midst of planning yet another competition - an annual writing competition for Australian writers of children’s books, aimed at honing your ‘pitching’ skills! It’s a goodie. Look out at Just Write For Kids Australia if you’d like to be involved this year.
So much planning. So, what have you planned for your marketing strategy?
If you’re a bit stuck for ideas, here are a few ways to be relatable on social media …
Behind-the-Scenes / A Day in the Life of …
Why not share a little of what you’re working on, or a video journal of your daily tasks? What does your writing / storyboarding process look like, or are you on a research trip to discover more about your next big idea? What does your writing, or illustrating space look like? And the best tip of all - who is your writing buddy? (I mean, show us your fur babies that keep you company!) Your audience loves that stuff!
Be personal …
Share a piece of your inspiration for your next project. Maybe it’s personal anecdotes, challenges you’ve faced and overcame, or a new discovery that’s guiding your personal journey. This will give readers some great insights into you and your author brand.
We all love a good book teaser!
Create intrigue! Keep people on the edge! Small snippets of your next book, a reading of the blurb, early testimonials or cover reveals are great ways to pique your audience’s interest and excitement.
Share the fans with the fans …
Encourage engagement by planning a promotion that gets readers involved, and then share their special fan mail, fan art, fan photos, or fan reviews with your ‘other’ fans! This is also a nice way to thank them for their support and generosity, and potentially create further buzz with other readers.
Giveaways and promotions …
Regarding the idea above, your promotion to receive fan engagement could coincide with a giveaway to win book-related prizes, other fun merch or even time with you!
Be the Sharer!
Remember my post on ‘collaboration’? Creators supporting creators speaks volumes, so share your engagement with other authors and their books - whether that’s a review, or photos of an event you attended together, or even a share of your latest library or bookshop haul. Don’t forget to tag them - what goes around comes around …
There are tonnes more ideas out there, but the key to marketing is being relatable and connecting with your audience. Remember to be unique, genuine and have fun!
